Real-estate Ginn to Buy MB2 and Expand PDF Print E-mail

The sale of MB2 Motorsports to real estate and resort developer Bobby Ginn should shore up the Nextel Cup team's short- and long-term future.

The deal, which will be announced Wednesday at a news conference at a Ginn Clubs & Resorts property in Orlando, will include a 10-race primary sponsorship this year for Sterling Marlin's No. 14 Chevrolet, solidifying a car that had lacked full-season funding.

The Ginn Company has several divisions that specialize in land acquisition, development, architecture, engineering, golf course construction and marketing. MB2 general manager Jay Frye, who will continue to handle the team's day-to-day operations as a minority owner, said Ginn's commitment ensures the survival of a team that has raced in Cup since 1996.

Times are tough in NASCAR for two-car teams such as MB2 and Robert Yates Racing. MB2 drivers Joe Nemechek and Marlin are ranked 30th and 31st in points. Yates hasn't fared much better and is losing drivers Elliott Sadler and Dale Jarrett and primary sponsor UPS next year.

Before Ginn's purchase of the team, Frye was considering a merger with Dale Earnhardt Inc. Frye said that option is off the table now that it seems MB2 has the potential for eventually keeping pace with title-caliber powerhouses such as Hendrick Motorsports and Roush Racing.

Frye is optimistic about attracting sponsors through cross-promotional tie-ins with Ginn, which has a sports entertainment division that manages and sponsors several LPGA and Champions Tour events.
